Getting Started

To start playing AD&D you do not need much, but you may want to get more books and material as you become more advanced in the game.

  • If you intend to only play in Thardferr, we recommend you own a copy of the AD&D 2nd Edition Player's Handbook.
  • If you desire to be a DM, you should get 3 books, the Player's Handbook, the Dungeon Master's Guide, and the Monstrous Manual. You can find a brief description of each of these books below.

Getting Started - Materials
Player's Handbook
Player's Handbook

defines all rules that a player needs in order to play, how to create your character and its statistics, defines the different classes and races, shows you how combats and magic works, gives all skills that you character can get and the spells that some classes can learn. Every player should read it to be able to play, and the DM (Dungeon master) should also know it by heart.
Dungeon Master Guide
Dungeon Master Guide

is designed for the DM (Dungeon Master) only. "Normal" players should not use, read or know it in anyway. It tells the DM how to create quests and campaigns, informs him about the different treasures and magical items that can be given to players, gives him more rules about the combat, how the experience is doled out, what is needed to gain levels and new skills, works, etc. In the DMG, you can also find a little information about monsters that can be found in the game.
Monstrous Manual
Monstrous Manual

is also a book for the DM (Dungeon Master), as it tells him everything about the monsters and races that can be found in the game, but that cannot be played by players unless you get The Complete Humanoids Handbook. It will tell the DM the monsters' attributes, how many life points they have, how they attack, how they live, where can you find them, how fast they can move, the treasures they own but also how much experience they give when you kill them.
OpenRPG.com

is the major gaming platforms used in Thardferr. If you wish to play, you'll need to download this by clicking the image above. Be certain to read through the announcements to find out what versions are working with what. For detailed instructions on procedural installation click here.
Hesperian

is another of the major gaming platforms used in Thardferr. Depending on whom your DM is, you may end up using this interface. You can find more information on this platform at Hesperian.
WebRPG.com

is also another gaming platform used within Thardferr, but it only recently has returned to a free version so not too many DMs will have this. Click the image above to visit their site.

To be able to play a pen and paper game, you also need a set of dice (not only 6-sided dice but also 20, 12, 10, 8, 4 sided dice). Those should be found at the same place you purchased your books.

Other useful books
Tome of magic
Tome of Magic
Tome of magic:
is a book you do not need in order to play. However, this book can be very useful for the DM and magic user players (Wizards and Priests). In it you can find a lot of new spells both for Wizards and Priests, as well as many magical items. If you are tired of always using the same spells and the same magical items, this book is ideal for you.

If you need more info about these books you can reach us at Site Administrators.
